[Early in the morning just before the sun rises, everyone's favourite (source needed) chaos goblin walks out into the middle of the Grove with a wicker basket full of small, colourless, white blobs shaped like vague creatures. Setting the basket on the ground, he carefully tilts it until each goes tumbling out, wide eyes taking in the various features of the landscape before tiny legs and wings carry them off toward people and residences.

Still crouched outside, Ain writes in his notebook in a perfect mimicry of someone else's handwriting:]

They are coming :)

[Then, he heads inside his home at the bakery to watch the chaos from his balcony.

The Artifact Creatures wander in search of a master. You, apparently, did not get the choice as to which one picked you - it just did, a squishy white and grey blob forcing its way into your window or out of your air vents or up through your drain to reach you. As soon as it spots you, its colour scheme shifts to match yours, big eyes staring up at you.

You are now the proud owner of something not dissimilar to Ain's Dachsologie, which can only mean good things for the future.

Later in the day, when he's sure most people have been invaded by small, indestructible beings who have now soul-bonded onto them, Ain writes in the notebook in his own handwriting:]

The creatures have species names!

Dachsologie is the name of the owl-looking hamster but it'll look like mine eventually (MINE ALSO GREW WINGS??? SUDDENLY?? SO APPARENTLY HE'S STILL GROWING :O )

The little round lion is Leon. The Elswords have one big Leon each.

The round deer is Serne! It will look more like a deer when it grows.

The small winged cat is Alisha ^^

The little bird is Revent

The tiny dragon is Vaikal!

The robotic looking round guy is Karte. It will look like a dragon when it grows too :O


This is my gift to everyone! They don't need to eat but they do like food and they're made of raw magic and they're emotionally and soul-ly bonded onto you now, so they'll grow with you as a person. Please be kind to them and give them names and kisses and stuff :O!!

Who is this... Ain? Are they the one who set these creatures loose?

He is, yeah. He's... a close friend of mine. And he's also the tailor around here. I think he just kind of wanted something lighthearted and fun after the last couple months.

[ He can't blame him, either. It's been rough to put it mildly. ]

[so it really was a just-because sort of gift? Ain did not want any compensation? Stardust considers Pavlova's words, then nods]

I see. Then, I shall take care of my Alisha. I have been trying to come up with a name for it...

[but he's not so good at that. the best he could think of was Star, or Starlight. but it deserves a better name than Stardust could offer, he feels]

I wasn't sure what to name Chantilly at first either. You don't need to name it right away if you can't think of something.

[ He watches the two tumble and play for a moment ]

I'm not very creative, my first thought was Konpeito

Con-pay-toe? What does that mean?

It's a little star shaped formation of sugar crystals. I've never seen them before, but I heard about them.

[ So same general thought but different execution. ]

[Stardust leans back so that he's no longer in Pavlova's personal bubble. sorry]

Sugar crystals, like candy?

[he looks down at the two Alisha playing together, and his own stops and looks up at him. it makes a cute sound. he likes that name, so he will consider it!]

Oh, right, Ain did also mention they don't really have a concept of gender so it doesn't matter what pronouns you use. I've been using masculine ones for mine due to the soul bond thing.

That makes sense. These creatures are certainly different!

They are. I'm kind of curious how these will look when they're bigger. Ain's got a different kind, but that's the only one I know of that's at least mostly full grown.

[ it reminds him to ask about Ain's other friends sometime. He doesn't know too much other than what he's read about how he feels about them. ]

[Stardust recalls what Ain had written in the Netbook. that these creatures would grow up with them. it makes Stardust curious, too. but he's usually curious about anything he doesn't know. it's fun to learn new things, and Stardust is absorbing all this new knowledge like a sponge]

We should work hard to grow, then. With our new friends!

[ So optimistic. He wishes he could be, but part of him doesn't really see himself growing past what he already has. ]

Right. Though I don't know if it's something that you can do on purpose?

[ That kind of change... he guesses if it's a drastic change it could be active but he feels like most change like that is more subtle even if you do work at it...

Either way he gets it. ]

Well, we'll see either way. How have you been doing?

It's been taking some getting used to, waking up in the same place every day. I traveled a lot back... erm. Back where I was before.

Chantilly squeaks when he's petted, seeming touch shy for a moment before ultimately coming around ]

I guess if you traveled a lot this must feel stifling. There are places you can go, though.

It wasn't only Earthbread. I traveled across different galaxies. I did not call one place home, not even the City of Wizards, where I was born.

[he holds out his hand for Chantilly, then, not wishing to spook him]

I do not mind being settled. I simply am not used to it. However, I do not think it is all bad, seeing similar faces day after day.

[ For all he's heard or read, his frame of reference is still woefully small.

Chantilly takes a moment, but eventually bumps against Stardust's hand. ]

That sounds... kind of lonely. Why didn't you settle down before?

I was... searching. For a new home. But, no matter how many galaxies I crossed, how many stations I visited, nothing spoke to me.

... the people are always what made a place home for me, and it takes time. Maybe you'll feel more comfortable once you make more friends?

This is what I've heard. Which is why I am interested in learning more about the people here. The fact that I cannot leave will force me to bond with people.

It... is no problem, pretty much anyone here would have. As far as bonding goes, sometimes in the less stressful months there will be games or gatherings, so you'll have plenty of chances to say hi.

[gatherings! that sounds nice. so do games, actually. Stardust doesn't know how to play many games, if any, but he'd do his best]

I will make sure to greet everyone I see, then! If they're all as friendly as you, I think it will be a welcome change of pace for me.

They're pretty friendly. Some more than others, but they mean well. I think everyone here's been through a lot.

[he stoops to pick up his Alisha again, after giving Chantilly one more pet. he rises to his feet with his new pet-pal]

And... it was lonely. Traveling, I mean. I saw many places, but... I would have given anything to have a friend to travel with.
