[Wolfwood is just off the heels of a waking nightmare which involved watching Hopeland burn to the ground, so needless to say he is not going to be walking headfirst into the mist any time soon. Be that as it may though, he'd ended up wandering pretty far from the house during that whole situation, so it only stands to reason he has to walk back.
And that's when he hears Zazie before he sees them, and it sets his already racing heard to pounding. He does not have the Punisher (it's back at the house due to aforementioned sleepwalking), but he does have his pistol at his hip, which his hand immediately goes to without him drawing it.
It could be another hallucination. He could be dreaming again.
