Blot is fine in small amounts, especially if you have a magic pen with a magestone like I do. When the pen runs out of ink, it also uses the blot I accumulate to write, outside of acting like a wand/focus of sorts. Naturally, you don't want to stress or overexert yourself too badly in normal cases, either. Too much blot, and you could get sick; it's just a part of life. With enough practice, you can use even more magic, with low blot cost. It's part of why I attend my college.

As for Overblot Phantoms, they're malignant creatures of pure blot and negative energy, with a one-track mind geared toward destruction. They're not ones to be reasoned with, especially after the poor mage in question withers away. They may be called phantoms, but they're very much tangible.
