EVENT & TDM 020

WAKES AND AWAKENINGS
Are you one to find yourself plagued with nightmares? Do you dream at all? Well, worry not, because tonight you find yourself in a somewhat alarming peace. You’re asleep. You’re aware of this. Yet, you feel incredibly lucid, all the same.

You hear the sound of water, like you’re under the ocean waves. You don’t see anything, but it’s almost as if you can feel others around you, despite not touching anything at all. They’re your… family? No. Friends? No. You don’t seem to be able to find a word to describe them. They’re important to you! …You think. Who are they, again?

You think they’re trying to speak to you, but all you can hear is the sound of gentle currents and air bubbles. Or maybe this is what they’re saying to you? You don’t know. Dreams are weird, aren’t they? But then they sing. It’s the prettiest sound you’ve heard. It’s the most haunting sound you’ve heard. It encourages you to move, at last. You didn’t realize you could. There’s a light that filters through the surface of the water…

…and you wake up. You feel strangely refreshed, like that’s the best sleep you’ve gotten in ages! You also feel… distantly sad, like you’ve just remembered something horrible that happened a long time ago.

It’s probably nothing.

For the rest of the month, you find sleep comes easy, and dreams are soothing. How uncharacteristically nice! Maybe don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
A BITTER ARRIVAL
You wake up to bitter cold. It's dark, the winds howling and whipping through the air, snow battering anything not sturdy enough to stand tall against it... and even the trees seem like one more push could knock them over. This isn't a forest you know, yet it seems like home. If you're not prepared for the cold, the warm lights of a small town will guide you, call to you, and your heart yearns for warmth. As you stumble through the heavy snow and harsh winds, something heavy hangs from your neck and the winds begin to form words with your own voice- SACRIFICE... END THIS WINTER WITH SACRIFICE.

As more voices join the wretched wails, your eyes feel heavier. You're almost to the town, though. Is it one of the houses that you wind up knocking on? Or do you manage to get to the inn, big and tall and radiating more warmth than anything you've ever felt? Regardless, you are no longer alone, but the cold still aches and clings, and something with your voice still calls it's omens outside. Only when you melt the heavy snowflake-shaped amulet hanging around your neck in the fires does the cold abate and the foreign copy of your voice fall silent.
A COLD RECEPTION
In the forest of the lost, the worst winter you've ever seen has finally set in full. The lake and river are both frozen over completely, and even the most hardy of beasts have hidden away from the cruel blizzard. The sky is dark, the winds are sharp and the freezing temperatures permeate most buildings, creeping in like a thief ready to steal the breath from your lungs if you aren't careful. Even fires seem to bend to this cold, save for the ever-burning, ever-blinding light of the fireplace in the inn- though she's long since gone, it seems one woman's faith still protects those in the Grove. Shadows haunt the clearing and amongst the winds and even the deafest ears can hear the voices howling alongside the storm, always demanding the same thing: a sacrifice.

When shadows flicker across the window, that is when you know you aren't alone. Ghastly wraiths of frost and ragged sleet fly through the air, and it's hard to tell if they are commanding the winter winds or if they are working in tandem. Regardless, the cold seems to be enhanced by their presence and if they catch you alone outside, they curse you with a frost so deep it pierces the heart and spreads. To some, it may be familiar, like turning to ice from within. To others it may be entirely new. But it spreads slowly and with agony while the wraiths make their demand once more and then vanish. Thankfully, a bit of kindness can melt the ice, but the winter wraiths are always willing to inflict the curse again...

... But you are not powerless. So long as you don't go alone, so long as you have a weapon, you can fend these things off, for a time. But they will be back.

They must have their sacrifice, after all.
BEACONS
Not everyone can fight though. Not everyone should. The only peace that can be found is in the sleep that follows that odd dream... but eventually the large shadow woman known as the Trader, Ydalir, makes her way through the snow to find you. With a warm furry blanket and a cup of tea, she gives you a small kit.

"Build these lanterns and hang them in the window. Be a light in the dark, loves." Is what she says.

The lanterns consist of wood, paper and a little cup for a candle. They can be in any shape and color, and when you hang them in the window the candle sparks into light. As frost clings on the other side of the window and the snow shrouds the outside world and veils what lies beyond, you can see other lights. Other lanterns, shining brightly. It may not be much, but it is still a sign. A reminder. You are not alone in this blizzard.
Spark Notes
summary
wakes and awakenings will bring you into a strange dream of being with many being, important ones, and a haunting song. Despite the melancholy feeling, it also brings a month of restful sleep no matter what.

a bitter arrival is how our new arrivals find themselves: lost in the woods in the middle of a terrible blizzard with only the faint lights of the Grove to guide you to safety. While you wear the snowflake amulet, the winter wraiths can use a mimicry of your voice to make their demands and curse you with a lingering freeze- only melting the amulets in a fire will set you free and silence the copy of your voice in the cacophony.

a cold reception shows just how bad the winter's gotten, with impenetrable ice freezing both the lake and the river solid. the wraiths curse whoever they see with turning to ice from within, but a genuine act of kindness or love will save their victims. the wraiths can be fought, but only with a companion or two, and definitely not with your bare hands. ... they will return though, again and again.

beacons grants perhaps a bit of hope in this dark winter- ydalir brings people supplies as best she can since the cold doesn't affect her shadowy body and there is nothing for the wraith to freeze, and she also brings a gift- a lantern to craft and hang in the window to show the others in town that you're all still here, cutting through the darkness.
out of character
Welcome to the first TDM of 2025! Regular AC resumes this month and as you can see, we're changing things up a little. TDMers are welcome and encouraged to reach out on our plotting post linked below. We're so excited to start the new year with everyone, and may the horrors stay in writing... because they are resuming now.
updates
❖ AFFOGATO COOKIE has used a magical artifact as a sacrifice. This has resulted in the blizzard lessening but still being present and the wraiths being banished from the grove, but still haunting the forest. There are further effects but they will come in to play during a player plot. ... Get your sacrifices in still though.
❖ MAYOI'S prayer to Ourania the day of the fight with Suri invoked a blessing: an aurora shines through the sky, and anyone in it's lights will be gradually healed and soothed.

No, unless it's severely isolated village. Father spoke of mountains and a lack of trees. We're surrounded by a forest, from what I hear tell and what I have experienced.

[ The question makes his expression soften and he turns to look at Joshua again. The hands rubbing together makes him cast about. There was a blanket... ah. Here. Snagging the blanket he had been given when he first arrived up, he moves to wrap it around his brother.

When he replies, his voice is just as soft. ]

I don't know. I have been told our souls have been called to a world that claims it is the origin of the birth of them, but... I cannot-

[ Believe that. Not after all they've experienced and everything told of them. ]

Hmm. Interesting...

[ Valisthea only has a small handful of places that one could consider a forest, and if Clive isn't familiar with it from what he's seen, then it's an odd situation indeed. Doubly so once Clive relays what he's learned. Joshua furrows his brow, taking the blanket and pulling it tightly around him. ]

I can't say that I understand... But once I've warmed myself and this snow storm dies down, I would like to do some research. There must be answers somewhere.

[ That gets both a fond sigh out of him and a soft huff of a laugh. ]

I figured you would say as much. You're going to be waiting a while. It seems this Winter is not keen on letting up until we offer it a sacrifice.

[ The distaste in Clives voice is obvious, as he moves to sit himself on the floor by the fire, curling one leg under and the other up so he can rest his arm on it. ]

Yet we know those Wraiths can be fought, and their death eases the hold, so I say let their death be the sacrifice they wish to see.

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ugh, he thought as much. Briefly, his nose wrinkles, but otherwise Joshua just turns back to look at the fire. ]

If only we knew how many we need to defeat... But I have a feeling you're willing to defeat as many as it takes.

[ Which means, he'll be going as well. He turns, tossing a smile at his brother. ]

So we'll do it together.
aneikonic: (013)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, and I figured you would say that as well. Like I would do it without you. Together, brother.

[ He smiles and gently shifts to hold his fist out towards Joshua. It may be a different world, but it looks like it has it's own set of problems that need fixing. And who better to help than them? ]
kingincognito: (50)

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[ They are indeed bonafide world-fixers. Or, well on the way to it, at any rate. He still doesn't know if they've succeeded in their world, but Clive alone has done enough good that it has to count for something.

He reaches out to meet Clive's fist with his own, bumping their knuckles together gently. ]

On that note, I'll be surprised if you haven't started without me. I don't know how long you've been here, but I feel like you dropped everything to go fight those wraiths the moment you learned of them.

[ There's a twinkle in his eye as he says it, teasing. Clive have you rested? ]
aneikonic: (048)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He's trying not to think of it. His body should be at it's limits, should be turning to stone under the weight of him casting that magic. He shouldn't even have magic left, according to what he knows of his deed.

But here he is. The blessing, the Eikons, Ultima still within him.

The fist bump makes him smile and he gently drops his fist after, then somehow manages to look awkward. ]

Ah. Actually. I have arrived but today. I have gone out several times already. To. Look for you.

[ He absolutely has not rested. He waited for his armor to dry, then stomped his way back out into the woods. ]
kingincognito: (4)

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[... uh huh. Just as he thought. Joshua sighs, shaking his head, but at least it's with a smile. He knows his brother too well. ]

Then, you're lucky I was brought here as well, wherever this is.

[ Clive could have gone out there and frozen to death. Or worse, with whatever those wraiths had planned. ]
aneikonic: (026)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I have my theories, but that is all they are. I am not you or Harpocrates.

[ He says it with a smile, a little tease. He understands theorycrafting and the deeper thinking needed for research is not for him, but he's heard enough from others. ]

If this is our world, something has gone horribly wrong with the spell that was cast. [ That he cast, his fingers lifting up to call Phoenix's flame to it. The blessing only. ] I should not be able to do this, brother. Ultima's power was overwhelming, I was... fading. [ Petrifying. ]
kingincognito: (12)

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll still take your theories into account. It's an excellent place to start, and I trust your judgment.

[ Anything is better than what he has now, a net zero of information.

What Clive tells him makes his brow furrow again, though. Clive was... dying? And what Clive told him earlier, once the wraiths had been dealt with... Are they being pulled from the brink of death? Is that it? ]

... you'll have to tell me all that happened after the last I can recall. Every detail.
aneikonic: (058)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He curls his fingers and clenches the flame, snuffing it, before sighing and turning his head away to look at the fire. He doesn't want to, but his brother asked. And he can't deny him anything. ]

What do you last recall?

[ Give him a place to start. ]
kingincognito: (34)

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[ They have to face it all eventually. Joshua takes a deep breath, closing his eyes. ]

The last I can remember, Ultima was being torn from my body. After that, everything went dark, and then I woke up here.
aneikonic: (066)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He doesn't remember then...

The way Clive's hands come together, the way his fingers fold and clench at one another, should be enough to warn Joshua. Just say it, Clive. Just say it so you can both grieve properly and move on, because Joshua is alive and that's all that matters. ]

It... was fatal. Ultima ripping his 'brother' from you. With your last bit of strength, you gave me the Phoenix.

[ While Clive begged and sobbed and asked him not to, to stay with him, to not leave him. Because though the Phoenix's fire raged through him, he was cold and alone and Joshua was limp in his arms. ]

It was the strength I needed to defeat him, however. And at the end, as he lay dying, I- I took his powers. I healed your body, but you remained- [ No. ] Using the Phoenix after Ultima's powers flowed into me, however, showed me it was too much. So I used my strength, every ounce of it, to cast a Wish. No magic. No crystals. To let people live on their own two feet, to walk into the future on their own terms. That's... that's the last I recall.

[ The brilliant all engulfing white. The pain, the fire. ]
kingincognito: (27)

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[ ... oh. Oh, Clive. Joshua had hoped against hope that he had survived it, that he had gone on to fight alongside Clive, that he wouldn't have put his brother through that anguish. He closes his eyes, clenching his fist at his chest. ]

... so I am...

[ Dead. He can't bring himself to say it, even if it's the truth. So, he focuses on the rest of it. ]

... your wish had to succeed. It had to. A world without magic, without suffering...
aneikonic: (053)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He hangs his head in silence to Joshua's soft words, his nails biting into his hands as the memory of the grief rolls through him. Dead. Yet here he's alive. Here he walks and breathes and is warm to the touch.

Heaven, for them both? Or Divine punishment for daring to go against the Gods. ]

For everyone whose hopes were placed on us. But... I can still feel them all inside of me. I can still feel him. And it makes no sense.
kingincognito: (47)

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Joshua's mind moves to the same thing. Some sort of afterlife. But accepting that would mean accepting that Clive died as well, and he can't bring himself to do that. Not now, not yet. Not until he's done the research. ]

You can still feel them...

[ Right. Clive had used the power of Garuda. He still possesses the power of the other Eikons. ]

... what if we were taken seconds before these events? Myself taken seconds before death, and you taken seconds before the magic disappeared?

[ He's not keen on the idea of Clive still being able to feel Ultima, but... Perhaps if he's sealed away under Clive's abilities... ]
aneikonic: (034)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Taken... by who? Who would have the power to snatch us away?

[ The Fallen? They had waged war with Ultima's collective, after all. He hms and tilts his head, recalling some things said to him. ]

I met a Beastman, mostly humanoid, who says he was told we're in a new world where our souls "originated" from.

[ And he blinks, thoughtful. ]

I met several Beastman who were mostly humanoid...

[ Does that help any, Joshua? ]
kingincognito: (40)

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That, I'm not sure. I'll need to ask around for more information...

[ Beastmen, though. Mostly humanoid. Several of them? Joshua frowns thoughfully, tapping his fingers against his chin. A world where their souls originated... ]

You didn't happen to get their names? I would like to talk to them.
aneikonic: (023)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Will, for the young male. [ Oh he's going to butcher the ladies name, forgive him Madam. ] And ... Tingyun... [ His tongue struggles with it, it's such a foreign name to him ] for the Lady. They may yet still be here in the Inn, she seemed keen on setting up as Inn Mistress.

[ The unspoken words are there. Don't go outside, please. ]
kingincognito: (36)

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Will and Tingyun... Got it.

[ His own tongue stumbles a little over the second name in the same way that Clive's did, simply because he doesn't know any other way of saying it. If they're good sources of information, he needs to keep their names on hand in his memory.

He can hear those unspoken words, though. He huffs out a soft laugh, sliding the blanket from his shoulders. He's starting to warm up now, and he doesn't need it as much. ]

What about you? What do you plan to do while I start my research?

[ He knows you, Clive. Don't ask him to stay indoors if you won't stay indoors yourself. ]
aneikonic: (030)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Ah. Called out. He relaxes his hands from their tight grip on each other, rubbing the knuckles ruefully. ]

I will do my duty. We are in a foreign world, with unknown dangers around us.

[ I was proud to call you my shield.

He lifts his eyes to his brother, the look warm but quite serious. ]

I will stick with you, and make sure in your research you are not brought to harm. As your Shield. Your brother.

[ The serious look melts, just a little. ]

I only just got you back. You're not ridding of me that easily.
kingincognito: (7)

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[ That look tells him all that he needs to know. He knew it. Clive had been planning on going out again. He shakes his head, smiling. ]

I never expected to rid myself of you, Brother. Far from it.

[ Joshua turns in his seat, handing Clive the blanket. ]

In fact, I assumed that you would want to get back to what's going on out there. But, with your dedication as my Shield, that means that I'll just have to go out there myself and do the same thing.

[ After all, if there are people in need of help, neither of them can say no, can they?]
aneikonic: (043)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He takes the blanket as it's handed over and folds it up carefully, setting it near the fire for the next frozen sod who comes in and needs it.

And... he laughs, as Joshua basically says yes well they're in this together. He gives him a gentle look, shaking his head, before sighing and lifting his hands in supplication his tone turning playful. ]

I am trying to keep you out of trouble. I'm the shield, remember?

[ But Joshua had been following after him from the moment he had first learned to walk. Didn't help that Clive's hand was always in his, leading him on. He's honestly shocked Father didn't get grey hairs earlier. ]

There is a woman of shadow [ And his tone says this is what he heard but he clearly thinks they just meant a woman in robes or something ] that may give us more information if we can find her.
kingincognito: (10)

[personal profile] kingincognito 2025-01-05 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[ As Clive laughs, Joshua feels a laugh bubbling up into his throat as well. It's true, he's always followed in Clive's footsteps. He knows his brother like he knows himself. Clive may be his Shield, but Clive has an intense desire to help others, and he can't deny that. ]

Alright, alright. We can take turns.

[ A woman of shadow... He, too, takes it to mean a woman in dark robes, but it's another lead to follow. He nods, folding his arms. ]

Any ideas where? If we have to go outside to find her, there's no telling when this storm will cease.
aneikonic: (031)

[personal profile] aneikonic 2025-01-05 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Taking turns is about as good as it's going to get and he chuckles softly in agreeance. ]

No, but she can't be far. From what little I've heard and seen, this "Grove" isn't that large. And it seems most are moving into the Inn for this Winter.

[ He nods to the fire, and how hot it burns without seeming anyone tending to it. ]

She must be around.
