They will shatter shortly after being killed, though it isn't immediate. There's about a ~30 second delay.

It's difficult to tell if they are under orders or not. They seem to have a one-track mind with murdering all of you. Whether that's because they've been given previous orders from something outside the area, or they're merely acting on autopilot, is difficult to tell.
