Perhaps I'll start with blot, a topic in and of itself. It's essentially magical waste that accrues with constant magic use. It's not recommended to use magic without a focus called a magestone, - which I do have on my person - else you accumulate much more blot than you would without it. Blot goes away with self-care. So, good rest, eating well, etcetera.
While supposedly rare, a physical side effect of excess blot is Overblotting. A mage can become consumed by blot and enter a sort of beserker mode. They are quite powerful like this, given they're not in their right mind and are going all out with their magic without any care for the repercussions. If not treated in time, it could be fatal; the mage in question becomes a seedbed for an Overblot Phantom - a creature of pure blot - that is created in the interim.
This normally doesn't occur often. Decades have passed without any overblot scares. Or at least it shouldn't have, but it's occurred to quite a few students at my arcane academy. We've stopped them all, and they're all safe, for the record.
some twst spoilers~!
