[Thorns walks into his room at the lab and sees Cy, nods because like... yeah whatever cats go where they want, but then does a double-take at a whole ass lilypad fox.]
[Cats do go where they want and it's good Thorns can respect that. It's also good he understands those rules don't apply to foxes.
Seeing she now has a protector she scurries to hide behind his legs, peeking out with wide eyes as the fox continues to sniff her way around the lab. She may be dripping a little. Sorry, Thorns. At least she doesn't appear to be an intentionally destructive fox.]
You should lock them properly. I was trying to sleep, you know.
[Fish Nene is hopping along after Thorns as usual and bounces excitedly on the floor when he sees Cy. Friend! Hi friend! He sticks his tongue out at her. Blehelelehe.]
I thought I did.
[But he can't even remember to button his shirt or wear socks most mornings so it doesn't shock him if he didn't. He sighs and walks forward, not at all fearing for his life from an unknown animal, and tries to scoop it up.]
Go on. This isn't your house. [it isn't really a house at all, it's a lab with a bedroom that he inherited from someone else.]
[Cy likes fish for the most part. Who wouldn't appreciate a creature that can be both friend and food? Today, though, she is a little spooked by its unexpected presence in what she'd anticipated to be a safe zone. She jumps back, fur bristling as Thorns attempts to remove the fox.
The fox, who as it happens, does not wish to leave. She goes limp and heavy as he lifts her, peering up at him plaintively. Why can't this be her house?]
¡Vamos, sal fuera! [He's going to the front door to deposit the fox outside, assuming he doesn't get bitten or clawed at for his transgressions against lilypadfoxkind.] There's no food for you to eat in here!
[Nene, meanwhile, continues to blehelehele at Cy, unsure why she's bristling but thinking this means play. He scoots closer and rolls onto his back. Hi, we are friends now??]
[He does not. She grumbles and writhes half-heartedly, but the fox is apparently a mellow creature and there's no real fight beyond making herself difficult to haul outside. Honestly, Thorns may have chosen to eject the wrong creature.
Cy is still unimpressed with Nene, but her nerves are somewhat tempered by her curiosity. She watches him cautiously as he rolls on his back, reaching out to prod his belly from as far a distance as her stubby front leg allows.]
[Truly... but he opens the lab door with one hand and sets her gently on the ground. He's never sure if the magical creatures here can understand him or not, but in case the fox can, he points down in the direction of the river.]
The river has fish for you. [And then opposite, to the north side of the Grove.] The forest there has other animals you can hunt. Don't eat people food, it's bad for you.
[And then he shuts the door, having a feeling that fox is somehow going to find her way back inside if he isn't careful.
As for Cy and Nene, though, he spins back around and watches Cy plapping the belly, which makes Nene squeak out a sound that kind of sounds like a baby seal going "blehhhh". Of course, the second he takes his eyes off the Saltscale, the little guy is trying to convince poor Cy to play.]
Lo siento, Cy. He's a baby Saltscale — he wants to play with you. His name is Nene, and he's my first mate's pet, who mysteriously ended up here with me somehow instead of back on the ship with her.
[Then again, Nene has a penchant for getting into Situations.]
[The fox continues to watch him with big, wet eyes, but thankfully makes no move to push her way back inside. Maybe she will follow his advice when the door is closed, or maybe she will try to sneak back inside later.
Either way, it's not a now problem.
The noises coming out of Nene are fascinating and doing wonders for her confidence even before Thorns steps in. Cy dares to prod Nene's belly a little harder with reassurance from Thorns, jumping back quickly and watching him from a few feet back where she's now crouched on the floor.]
Bleeeh.
[It's. Not an accurate imitation of the sound, but she's having fun with it.]
[It doesn't take Cy long to decide that maybe this strange creature isn't so bad after all. Her trepidation all but vanishes completely, backing away from him becoming a game.
His raspberries are especially fascinating. They may be weak, but try as she might she can't reproduce it at all. She's just blepping at him.]
Wait until you hear it while isolated with him for months and months in the salt flats.
[Nene looks at Thorns and pouts, blows another raspberry, and continues playing with Cy. This is all affectionate, but it truly is like having a toddler around constantly.]
He's smart. He responds to commands, and he knows how to get himself into and out of trouble. I know it sort of looks like the lights are on and no one's home, but I fully believe he'd attack someone if you told him to. Not that he bites very hard.
[She loves his sounds, thank you, and will continue to prod him in the hopes of getting more blehs out of him. She could spend months and months and months hearing nothing but that, clearly. She does look a little sceptical that he would fight now she's got her confidence up around him.]
[Nene doesn't exactly have teeth. He has blunt little gnashers, and while he could grip and pinch very well, even a fellow small creature such as Cy might not have much to say about it.
Her prodding does get more blehs and behhhs and belheehehsss from him while he blows his raspberries and bounces closer toward her. Playing!
[Cy, meanwhile, has very sharp and pointy teeth. It's not much of a competition, but she seems pleased with his acknowledgement anyway.
She's more than happy to carry on playing without attempting to prove the superiority of her fangs, not doing anything worse than batting him lightly with her paws before she dances away and drops into a bow to try and imitate him.
She can sort of get the blehs, but her raspberries continue to need work.]
someone else's home :) in this case, thorns'-
Uh.

Did I... leave the window open?

"Beeehh... blehh!!" he says, and then blows the world's weakest raspberry in response with his little tongue.
Thorns sits by at a nearby workbench and watches, enthused.]
