[Genya stumbles back, then turns as if it snap. Something, however, stops him short. It could be the reality of the situation their in, perhaps. Or maybe Genya is learning for once.
Either way, he presses his lips into a thin line and nods. Even as he tries to move away, though, he can't seem to tear his eyes off of the child. The words haunt him, echoing in his head even though the child has stayed silent.]
Don't turn your back on him. [Genya hardly realizes he's speaking.] He's the best swordsman I know.
[Maybe not like this. But then, Sanemi had survived long enough to reach the corps, so who could really say.]
[That seems hard to believe, but then given just what he has in his hands....]
O-okay...
[Min is starting to think that maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Running the traditional way is clearly out if they have to keep watching, but it's not like they'll be able to make much progress like that.
He slips his mini-synth out of his pocket cautiously, watching for any sudden movement from the boy.]
Hold on. I'm going to put up a barrier.
[With that said he's quick to flick the switch to turn it on and start playing the tune that will put up a shield around them. Much as he doesn't want to startle his new companion, he also doesn't want to give the child the chance to attack.]
[Despite Genya's words, the boy behind them shows no interest in outright attacking. Nor does he try to really give chase. Even if they increase their speed, the boy remains walking steadily. Not a single glance is given to Min-Gi, those eyes are trained exclusively on Genya.
He is a little surprised to watch the shield come up, but perhaps not as much as he could be. Sure, most breathing attacks are offensive, and never last more than a few moments save a few exceptions, but it's not entirely unbelievable to the boy.
What's more impressive is the fact that Min-Gi doesn't use a sword to do it. Hell, he doesn't use a weapon at all.]
[The eyes being locked on the other guy doesn't make him feel any better. That could change at any moment, and even if it doesn't... he feels sort of responsible for his safety now.
He gives him a confused look at the question, that not being a question he's ever been asked, or that he'd ever thought he would be asked.]
I'm a musician.
[Min-Gi angles the mini-synth so that Genya can see it better even as he keeps playing, though it may not become any more obvious than it had been.]
I wouldn't know how to use a sword even if I did have one.
[That answer.... doesn't make any sense. Not to Genya, who's so used to the way things are in his world. Only Demon Slayers could stand up to something like this. He does have half of a mind to ask if being a musician had anything to do with sound breathing but. No, that'd be stupid. This guy didn't have a thing in common with Uzui, to say the least.]
But you're - [Talented, is what he wants to say. Everything that Genya still wasn't. But he doesn't. He simply nods.]
There's a building up ahead. We'll step behind it, and I'll shoot a window across the street. Hopefully he goes for the sound of glass breaking, and not for us. That's when we run.
[He can practically hear Sanemi's voice accusing him of being a coward. He'll beat himself up over it later.]
[He's what? Min-Gi's lips tug down in a slight frown, but given the situation they're in he doesn't push him to answer.
He only nods, looking over towards the building he's pointed out. He looks young, but that also seems like a solid plan. Much better than keeping on playing and hoping that he gets bored before Min-Gi's hands get too tired.]
Okay.
[Min definitely sounds nervous, but he's ready. He hopes.]
[Is it a little nerve wracking, being the one calling the shots? Just a little. Genya is a nobody, barely scraping by as a Demon Slayer as far as he's concerned. People like Tanjiro are the ones who can come up with plans, effortlessly finding a path through the chaos. What Genya's thrown together feels pathetic at best.
But this guy is willing to listen to him? What kind of idiot -
He pushes the thought from his head. He can beat himself up later, when he doesn't have someone else's life in the palm of his hands. For now, he steadies himself with the only breathing he knows how to do, and waits until they step around the corner. Only then does he lift his hand, expertly firing the shotgun with one hand while pulling Min-Gi in the opposite direction.
Sanemi takes the bait, bursting into motion and leaping through the broken window. That's all Genya lets himself see before he faces forward, sprinting as fast as his body will allow.]
[Min-Gi remains blissfully (?) unaware of the inner monologue, holding the tune that's keeping the barrier up while he waits to see if the plan works.
It had seemed like a good idea, but Min still lets out a breath he hadn't known he'd been holding when the kid follows the shot. Not that any sense of relief lasts long. He's clearly capable of being fast, which could be dangerous for them if they don't move themselves.
He drops the stylus, letting it dangle from the body of the mini-synth as he runs after Genya, not daring to look back now they don't have any protection.]
[Genya loses track of how long they run for. Certainly not as long as he, personally, could have — but likely just under. Right now, his body is only slightly more hearty than a well-trained humans. Which means he's frustratingly weak compared to the monsters they're up against.
Mostly, though, he keeps on Min-Gi, and once he starts to flag, he allows himself to slow down. He's kept an eye out for any pursuing monsters, but thankfully nothing seems keen to have chased after them. It's a small relief.]
[Even with the times he's had to flee with his time in the Grove, Min-Gi's stamina is easily less than a well-trained human. It hurts to breathe by the time they come to a stop, and it's fortunate there are no monsters close enough to hear with how loud it is. He leans against a nearby wall that's still solid enough to hold his weight, unable to check in with Genya immediately.
He nods a little to at least acknowledge the questions, but it's a good minute before he can wheeze out a response, and even then it's with difficulty.]
[It takes only a few seconds for Genya to at least recuperate enough to be on the alert. There might not be any monsters yet, but it's only a matter of time, especially with the guy breathing like he is. Not that he holds it against him.]
Yeah. Been... through worse.
[He does give his companion a once over, just to be sure. He doesn't smell blood or anything, but it can't hurt to make sure.]
That was... really cool what you did back there. Thanks.
[He sounds surprised. The only reason he got the shield is because he knows he can't hold its own. He thinks it's pretty cool he can do that with a synth, but he's well aware it's not the most impressive power out there.
Although... now he realizes he's not all that sure how he came across the power. He should remember something like that, shouldn't he?]
[Genya doesn't know the first thing about a synth, or magic for that matter. As far as he's concerned they just kind of do that, so the fact that Min-Gi clarifies... just makes him all the cooler to the kid.]
Guess you must be a real badass, pulling that off.
[Aaand just to make sure he keeps the attention off of himself even longer....]
We should probably find a place to shelter. Don't trust that something worse won't try and find us.
[A badass? Him? Min-Gi has to give him a long look before deciding he isn't making fun of him. He doesn't know quite what to make of it, face reddening in a way that's decidedly not badass.
Thankfully Genya changes the subject, giving him the chance to move things along.]
Y-yeah. Definitely. There's got to be a building safe enough to hide out in.
[Most of the ones surrounding them now are not fit for sheltering in, but maybe if they go a little further...
He still isn't meeting his eyes as he sets off to try and find them a safer building.]
[It's not the weirdest thing, having someone not meet his eyes. Genya is naturally pretty shy, so it's par for the course for him. No judgement here. Rather, he keeps his own gaze on the task at hand, gingerly stepping further into the labyrinth of buildings. His fingers trace along the edges of buildings where he can, as if by touch alone he might be able to determine what place was best to rest in.
He can't, just for the record.]
Shinazugawa Genya, by the way. Just in case we get separated and you need to shout my name, or somethin'.
I don't think it's a good idea to shout when there are monsters out there.
[But that's not really the main takeaway, is it?]
I'm Min-Gi. Park. We'll try not to get separated.
[They don't seem to be a bad team, and even they were it's not like Min would intentionally abandon him. He can help more than he used to, and skilled as Genya is he is still just a kid.
Besides, the buildings are starting to look a little more intact. With luck they'll find one that's safe to shelter in before they run into any other threats.]
[Okay, that does manage to net an exasperated eye roll from Genya. Thankfully, Min-Gi has earned enough good will for the year to keep anything more volatile from spilling out. Great job, buddy! This will not last, as we know.]
Y'know, I'd say it's nice to meet you, but... [He wobbles his free hand. The circumstances are kind of ass.]
How many times can you do that shield thingy, anyway? Are you going to run out of strength if you try again, or...?
[He gets it. It's not nice to meet anyone when you're in a life or death situation.]
It doesn't matter how many times I do it. As long as I play the right tune, the shield will hold.
[There is a limit in terms of how long he can keep it up, but he's a musician. He's used to playing for long periods of time. The mini-synth is less comfortable, but even so. The real problem is having to listen to the same short loop of music over and over again.]
[Which he doesn't sound entirely approving of, but Min can't deny that it helped get them out of trouble just now. Non-violently, too, which he's not sure he would have been able to handle if he had suggested it.
The next building along looks fairly intact, but enough of the brickwork is loose he isn't sure how long it will stay that way. The next one, however...
It's definitely in bad shape, on the surface even worse than the one he's just passed up, but what's left looks solid. He nudges the wall tentatively, trying again when nothing budges. It might be okay?]
[Unfortunately, in Genya's eyes his use of a gun is more of a failing in his mind, than any sort of success. He's not about to try and explain all of that right now, though. It won't make sense to most people, this much he knows.
Naturally Genya is a little skeptical of the proposed shelter at first glance. Like Min-Gi, though, he quickly spots the potential, and gives a nod. He takes the first step toward the building, before glancing back at his companion.]
[That's an unsettling response, even without context. Min doesn't know what circumstances have led someone so young to need to learn how to use a weapon like that, but he's clearly the better candidate to actually search the building. He nods, trying not to think too hard about the fact he could be walking into danger. It's not as though looking out for him is without risk either.]
[Genya isn't exactly good at working with other people. The nature of his own technique makes it a risk, and that's to stay nothing of his own unsociable personality. Tanjiro, and by extension, his friends, had been the exception, and that had been a special case given the other boy's vibrant and unfaltering personality.
All that is to say, it's strange to have someone so willing to work with him. It's also nice to know that someone has his back. He feels less like he has to look over his shoulder or impossibly on guard as he works his way through the building.
He isn't sure how long he's gone for. He makes sure to be thorough as he goes, but nothing reveals itself to him. Content with that, he returns to the front door and motions with his head.]
[Min-Gi is admittedly starting to have his doubts by the time Genya returns. His absence makes him feel negligent. Should he really have let him go in there on his own? What happens if he runs into trouble? What if he's hurt already.
It's a huge relief by the time he does reappear, and Min is more than happy to join him inside, closing what's left of the door behind them.]
I'm not sure how long we have before something finds this place.
[It will do for now, but they shouldn't let their guards down too much.]
[Which is why, as soon as Min-Gi is through the door, Genya slides down the frame of it. He lays his gun against his thigh, but doesn't bother holstering it.]
We'll take turns keeping watch. An hour or two a piece. We might not have much time, but you have to keep up on your rest.
[Genya knows they both have precious little stamina. Maintaining it was the only way they were going to manage to survive.]
