[Ah, here's the occupant of the dream as he ought to be. He's remarkably skilled at controlling his dream environment too, Astrid is impressed.]
If you don't mind terribly.
[Honestly, color Astrid curious about this guy. He's pretty sure he's only seen him in passing, once at the bar during the uh, interesting game of spin the bottle, and around town by occasion, so it'd be interesting to actually have a conversation... or in this case, learn he'd already had one with him over the book--
He settles himself down next to Kyojuro, cross legged with his hands in his lap.]
I'm Astrid. I'm not sure if we've met before properly.
[Likewise, Kyojuro settles down in seiza, palms lain over his knees. Now that he has slipped from the vestiges of his dream, he is able to look around his environment. He resists the urge to sigh, swallowing down the longing for a home he will never be able to return to. Instead, he returns his attention to Astrid.]
Kyojuro Rengoku, former flame hashira of the flesh eating creatures corps! I hope you will accept my apologies in kind for the hostile reception! I am afraid the aforementioned creatures have left my psyche on edge, it would seem!
[Despite the unexpected interruption, Kyojuro's demeanor really isn't that far off from what he had portrayed in the books. If anything, a faint melancholy tinges his words, but he is hardly conscious of it.]
You would be quite surprised! The flesh eating creature we encountered shortly before our arrival here was quite adept at manipulating dreams! Lulling a slayer into a false sense of security was a nearly foolproof strategy. Most slayers would be defenseless, if their senses were not honed to the sharp point of my own.
[Not that he hadn't fallen victim to the spell itself. His unconscious mind was just ready to pick a fight.]
A hashira is considered a leader amongst the corps. It means pillar, and we help our cohort remain standing tall in the fight against the flesh eating creatures!
[You're hard to forget buddy, even in text format.]
Ohhh, I see. No wonder you have such keen senses, then.
[Nodding, nodding. He seems like he'd make a good leader, not that Astrid knows him particularly well enough yet to say that for certain. Just... something about him.]
How did you end up slaying a creature like that, that was invading everyone's dreams? Seems like it'd be pretty hard to catch.
Indeed! To fail in doing so would surely spell our demise. And it has saved both myself and others many times over!
[Kyojuro's brows do draw together at the question. A scowl briefly forms on his lips. For all his talk of sharpened senses, he had failed to realize the spell being woven until it was too late. The demon had been wise to move as he had.]
Indeed it was. None of us realized what had happened until we had already succumbed to our dreams. It was my junior who was first able to escape, and with the assistance of his sister, a flesh eating creature herself, we were each released in time. After that, I sent two of the boys I was with to properly end the creature, while myself, his sister, and another boy handled the demon's attacks from the inside of the train!
[Yeahhhh he didn't mention this being on a train, did he? Oh well!]
The three of us were able to protect the passengers, while the other two successfully thwarted the creature and beheaded it.
You were on a train the whole time you were dealing with this creature?
[Astrid leans in a little, eyes wide and curious. This is the kind of dashing tale he'd probably read about in a book — he knew what trains were from literature, but they weren't really uh, a thing anymore, so it made the tale all the more otherworldly to him.]
You lead an interesting life, it seems. Did you and your corps travel around in search of these types of flesh eating creatures to try and defeat them?
I was! The Flesh Eating Creature had subsumed the entire train, making each train car its very innards. Our blades and claws were the only thing to keep the creature from consuming the humans it had trapped!
[Kyojuro is a bit of a boastful man. Thus, when Astrid fixes his attention on him, he can't help but puff his chest out the slightest bit, and tell the story with all the more enthusiasm.]
In a way, yes! We Hashira were assigned individual territories, and it was our duty to patrol and defend them. Individual slayers were also dispatched for less serious threats along the way!
[Astrid isn't sure what he's supposed to imagine here for what that looks like, but his mental image ends up on some sort of fucked up evil version of cat bus.]
That's pretty amazing. Are all these flesh eating creatures so equally inventive and tricky?
[Probably not incorrect. We do not think about the intestine train here. We do not.]
Many are, yes. Any demon of notable strength tends to possess a Blood Demon Art. This creature could manipulate dreams. Others I have come across could summon shadow creatures in the form of wolves, or alter movements with a single blow of a flute.
[There is another he thinks of, but opts to keep those details tucked away. Talking about a demon with fierce punches and kicks that rivaled fireworks, or the compass he could summon, would only draw suspicion toward Akaza.]
It is why we train our own skills to such a fine point. Without that, we slayers would be helpless.
There are monsters where I come from, but usually only Elemagus like myself or the Armatus tend to possess rare and exceptional powers and abilities like that. The enemies we face are a bit more, ah... basic in comparison.
That is a good thing, I think. It means you are well-equipped to handle the dangers of your world, all without doubting your continued survival. What I would not give for a world like that.
[Even if Astrid seems unsure if there are worse things out there.]
I do indeed. You have no doubt seen the flames that occupy this realm. They are a manifestation of the breathing technique I have spent years learning! When I use my blade, I conjure forth flame itself.
Adaptation is the surest way to overcome anything, would you not say?
[It was how the corps had come so far, after all. Learning how to use breathing techniques had changed the fight against demons entirely. Even now, new hunters were adapting the techniques that had run through generations, seeking new ways of fighting for themselves.
That comment of Astrid's, though, manages to spark a bright laugh from Kyojuro.]
I suppose I do make it rather obvious by how I dress, don't I?!

[Where you like, pledged to look out for him and help him have more happy days? It was pretty cute.]
It's alright, no need to apologize. Many people aren't partial to having someone just wander into their dreams, no matter the circumstance.
[He offers him a slight smile.]
What's a "hashira"?

Not to mention the fun little wall of flames surrounding us.

Especially with how apologetic he looks at that second comment.]
I do apologize for how... aggressive my defenses are. It is clear that you mean no harm! Hopefully my mind will learn as much going forward.
