[Among the few benefits of being genetically enhanced is the ability to act and think incredibly decisively; one could call her abilities of perception superhuman, even. However, her body's physical capabilities are not otherwise enhanced, as far as strength and stamina goes, as it would have been pointless when they expected her to be in a robot suit almost 100% of the time. In fact, her body was a ticking timebomb as it was, constantly marching towards an inevitable end much sooner than most, and she could feel herself begin to strain under not only the same constraints of nourishment Genya was facing due to their circumstances, but her own physical limitations.
But there were still mannequins yet to fight.
She could tell she needed to retreat back to her SAM suit to recover soon enough. But not in front of this boy — she had a double life to keep up. So she takes a deep breath and keeps pushing forward, her quick and efficient strikes starting to waver. By the time only a few remain, she's stumbled to one knee, breathing heavy as she uses one sword plunged in the ground to keep herself steady.]
[Genya has thrust his sword into the chest of the last mannequin in his eye line when he hears that stumble. He turns around and audibly swears. She's still in deep shit, and there's no way Genya can get there fast enough.]
Fuck fuck fuck FUCK.
[He feels his voice rise in pitch, all but snarling as he tries to draw the attention of the remaining mannequins to him. He had sworn not to use his gun in this fight, but if it's a matter of range on top of one involving life and death, then he'll do it.]
Why don't you pick on somebody your own size, you ugly fuckers?
[... They look like Firefly. They're the same size as Firefly, Genya what are you -
Yeah his shotgun is firing off. Two consecutive blasts felling the two nearest to Firefly, before he finally races forward and cuts the head of the third clean off. These movements are more instinctual, exactly what he would do against a demon if it came down to it.
His breaths come heavy as he lingers in front of the girl. He doesn't dare look back at her, not right now.]
[She confirms — as far as injury goes, at least. Mentally she is definitely not alright, but that's a whole other can of worms that wasn't this guys problem. Firefly avoids looking at the massacre of Knights around them, offering a soft moment of silence before speaking up again.]
I'll forgive you for calling me ugly, though.
[And she offers him a very exhausted but teasing smile, even though he isn't looking her way. Maybe the remark would garner his attention long enough to look?]
[Genya is just turning to look at Firefly when she speaks again. His body goes entirely rigid, face rapidly flushing to a bright red. Even just the sight of her out of the corner of his eye threatens to send him into a conniption. Instead, he opts to turn forward once more, sheathing his blade with one hand and holstering his gun with the other. Hands free, he rakes them through his hair.]
I-I didn't - I mean - !! [He grinds his teeth together.] Wellsinceyou'refineIbettergo.
[She can't help but laugh gently despite the bone deep exhaustion, griping the hilt of her sword to force herself back to her feet, wobbling slightly as she does. She dissipates both blades, figuring she wouldn't need them for now.]
Can I at least know your name before you run away? I'm Firefly.
[It's a shame that Genya is turned away. He might have actually enjoyed watching those swords disappear. It's a cool technique. As it is, though, he sharply crosses his arms over his chest, as if it might somehow keep him from having a meltdown.
The tension in his body is painfully obvious. From the sound of his voice, his jaw is clenched almost too tight to speak.]
S-Shinazugawa. Genya Shinazugawa. [And after a beat.] Be, uh. Be careful out there.
[Firefly isn't sure what she did to deserve this reaction, but it's equal parts cute and utterly baffling. It wasn't because she was a girl, was it...?]
Nice to meet you. You too, okay? Uhm — wait, before you go.
[She takes her pack off her back and begins digging around in it, before pulling out a -ˏˋ Single Protein Bar ˎˊ-]
I was saving this for when I couldn't stand it anymore, but you take half, okay? You look hungry, too.
[Unfortunately, it is indeed because she's a girl. And a cute one at that. What if he just died about it?
Anyway, Genya is thirty seconds away from storming off and beating his head against the wall when Firefly seems to call him back. Normally, he'd ignore her, just as he had the Love Hashira. But she's clearly been through a lot, and it'd be rude to just... leave her when she wants something. Especially in a place like this.
Stiffly, Genya turns around. He doesn't look at her face at all, instead settling on the protein bar. He has... no idea what is, beyond the fact that it's food.]
I don't - [Normally he doesn't eat human food, not when what he can snatch from demons provides so much more benefit. But save from the tooth he'd stolen from Akaza, he hasn't had much by way of that, either. So...] ... Are you sure? You're smaller than me. You - you need it more.
[He takes the bar (ignore the way his hand shakes, thanks) and pulls it back to his chest. He doesn't take a bite right away, instead chancing a glance at Firefly's face.]
Thanks. Really.
[And back down to the ground.]
Seriously. Don't go dying out there. You're - you're too nice for that.
[He's heard that before. How many of the others slayers had declared as much, only to be ripped to shreds before they even knew there was a fight to be had. Hell, even Genya knew that for all his promises to fight like hell, he was just as likely to wind up lunch.
Especially for some girl who was winded fighting what appeared to be little more than dolls. But he doesn't say as much out loud. He won't spit on her hope, and not just because he can't manage a single word around her.
He does catch the nod and... finds himself lifting his hand just a little too late. Her back is turned to him, and he just stands there awkwardly for a second. Right. Gotta see a wall about a good bashing, doesn't he?]

[Every day she's fighting against her fate, and a silly town full of monsters isn't about to cut her life even shorter than it already was.]
You watch out too, okay? Bye-bye~.
[She does a little wave, positioning herself in a way that hopefully he could see it even with his eyes averted.
Bye Genya she's gonna go vibe in her SAM suit for like, a good long while—]
