( she reads his first question and wishes she had a better answer for him. )
I am... not sure. You are not the first to come here after having passed, and I am sure you will not be the last. But we do not know what awaits you if we can manage to return home. It is... assumed that should you leave this realm, you will return to whatever afterlife you had joined.
I'm sorry that I don't have a better answer for you. But- if there is a way...
( if there is a way.
please, let there be a way. let her be selfish and rewarded for it, just once. let her have all that she loves in her hands and let her be wise enough to hold on to it and blessed enough to keep it.
he hands her the next question and this is... where she hesitates. )
... Originally Pure Vanilla Cookie, Dark Cacao Cookie, and three others I do not believe you'll know, Clotted Cream Cookie, Sparkling Cookie and Time Keeper Cookie were here. They have been lost to the woods, but... there is also two others. Shadow Milk Cookie and Pavlova Cookie.
... They are our allies here. And with Pure Vanilla's care and guidance, Shadow Milk has... made steps towards change. I did not believe it myself. Not until we were left to mourn Pure Vanilla together, alone.
[ha........... he takes this information in, but looks surprised at the idea of Shadow Milk even attempting to change. of course, stranger things have happened. after all, he is dead, supposedly. was, and now he's here. in a new humanlike body.
he folds his hands for a few moments, thinking about what to ask next, what to say. then, there is a slow nod. he writes:
"While I am skeptical, I do not disagree that you and he, and the other, should remain united. If you truly wish to live here as allies who work towards a common goal, then I shall support you."
( hesitantly, she reaches for his hand, her own tea having been neglected. )
I have watched him myself. He is... growing. I won't ask you forgive him. Creators know you've endured so much at his hands. But Pure Vanilla inspired something in him, and he is chasing it. Please trust me in this, at least.
and only you, for now, but that goes left unsaid. he turns his hand to take hers. Elder Faerie no longer fears death, himself, what he fears, now, is much worse. but that's fine. he'll manage. all he must do now is protect White Lily.
he writes another question:
"Will you tell me more about the monster that punished you?"]
( will he when he learns how far mutual comfort in the depths of grief has turned into genuine affection? the thought terrifies her. but... he would be valid to hate her for it, too.
she is quiet, thinking. )
This world is beholden to three gods. Beiwe the Golden Sun, her wife Ourania the Silver Moon, and a third, Beiwe's brother... the Fallen Sun, who must go unnamed lest we empower him more. When he fell from divinity, it was the start of a divine war, and he was sealed away within a temple that would become home to a grand forest.
Centuries ago, a merchant by the name of Callisto and her crew broke into the temple seeking treasures and artifacts- and they freed him on accident. He has taken root in the forest, and it is part of him now. He pulls us through a rift between worlds to toy with us again and again, with no end in sight.
Every few weeks he strikes, tormenting us in new ways. ... He also... can infect people with a corruption, where he can taint their mind and harm them from afar, usually shown through... plant growth on their person.
He has worked a deal with a native child, Nene, where if one dies, her mother can resurrect them... but it has a cruel cost that he collects himself. No one knows the details of this, as Nene has stated that talking about it will break the deal.
[listen, Lily, you can love whomever you want. far be it from him to judge her.
but, alright. he listens to her words, uttering a soft "Tch" out loud when White Lily mentions the torture. he must glean whatever knowledge he can in a short period of time. thankfully, he has White Lily, now, and she seems to be fairly knowledgeable on the situation]
I see.
[hm. again, he's not sure what to write, or what questions to ask at this point. what does he want to know about most of all?
"He seems incredibly powerful. That worries me."]
i just realized i forgot affogato cookie was also in the cast for a while i am the WORST
He is. He... managed to render Shadow Milk Cookie completely powerless upon his arrival. He knows our minds better than we do, uses our darkest depths to haunt us.
[he is exhausted, taking up his teacup again to sip. a long sip, then a nod, then he sets the cup down.
he picks up the pad and starts writing:
"Even Shadow Milk Cookie? Whatever the case may be, you should do your best to not anger it again. I shall attempt to find out more information and, perhaps, a weakness."
then he hands her the paper. he just got here and he's already trying to strategize]
( oh, her friend... she wishes she could ease it for him. vanny would know what to do. )
Even him, yes. He's recovered a bit of power, but- there is still a chokehold on him. ... I fell into a trap, when I died. Sometimes- sometimes when we are killed in it's games with us, it isn't counted as a proper death and we simply wake up in our beds, injured but alive. We had thought it would be an improper death.
... Oh, this all must sound so... its a part of a very long story.
[proper death and improper death? the anguish in Elder Faerie's eyes is easy to see. he can't believe that any Cookie had to go through this, particularly his lily.
he glances away, covering his mouth with his hand for a moment. he is sad, but also frustrated? boiling with rage without showing it. but she can probably feel it. she knows him better than most]
It's alright.
[he finally says, then remembers she cannot hear him and writes it down properly:
"It's alright. What you are telling me is that there are many ways to crumble here. I understand. What I do not understand is how this Forest can pick and choose Cookies and other beings and bring them into its clutches. What gives the Forest its power?"]
( lily is quiet for a moment before finally taking a sip of tea. )
... It starts with the story of a man named Aldric. After a plague claimed his wife and youngest son, he had thought that... if there had been better trade routes across the continent, perhaps medicine could have reached his hometown on time. So he set off to make an official route that involved going through the forest...
... Little did he know, the forest was the home to a temple. And within that temple, an ancient god had been sealed. He made his route through the woods, but ultimately he felt more at home in a new settlement than he did his old home or the city with medicine, and thus Aldric's Grove came to be. But several years into the town's creation, a woman named Callisto and her crew appeared. They called themselves merchants, but... they were more treasure hunters.
They broke into the temple, and the god was freed. For years he tormented the town, taking his anger out on them. Eventually, the townsfolk were bespelled by other villagers- should they crumble, their souls would escape to another universe rather than become the god's fuel and power. ... And then the town was massacred. But the god got bored after centuries trapped within the forest, which has become an extension of his power, so he began reaching through the cracks of reality into other worlds.
... Those people who lived in the town... are the only ones he can pull from across dimensions once more. We... are the reincarnated citizens of the town of Aldric's Grove.
[he listens quietly, finishing off his tea. the more he hears, the more distraught he becomes. reincarnation, huh? White Lily is correct, it does sound unbelievable... but not unheard of. his brows furrow in thought. he is so tired, but he wants to know more.
after another confirming nod, he takes up the pen and pad of paper and writes:
"I believe you. You have become quite knowledgeable of the workings of this world. I am proud of you, though I also am sorry you and the others had to suffer for it. How long have you been in this world?"]
I have been here for a year and one turn of seasons. It's hard to track time here, with days and nights blending and sometimes... repeating. It's a strange world.
( ... stars, she's so tired thinking about it. but she rereads the praise and smiles a little. it feels like she's done nothing sometimes, so having recognition from someone who knows her best... ... she needs to earn it. but it still makes her happy. )
I think it's mid-autumn right now. It was summer when I first woke up here...
( lily is quiet for a moment before she smiles, leaning against him slightly. she's always been reserved, both out of an insecurity of her scent and worth but the love she's been given here... it lets her feel confident to be affectionate. )
Many horrors, yes. ... But there has been so much love, too. The people here are kind. Even when they fight amongst each other, we work together. I've made so many friends, and found people I can even consider my family... I adore the people here. I hope you can, too.
[oh! that is good news, to know that White Lily has people she can depend on... even in his absence. he reaches out to pet her hair tenderly.
for a while, he says nothing, writes nothing, lulled by her scent into deep thought. it's nice to see her again, but Elder Faerie is extremely worried about what will happen to him now that he's here. and what will happen if he is returned home.
at last, he picks up the pen and paper again:
"Is there anything else you would like to share with me?"
( oh that is such a loaded question. oh no. oh stars. )
... I think... any more that I have to say may be more detrimental to your rest right now. I don't want to overwhelm you more than I already have.
( hopefully she can smooth things over for the cookies before she has to get to the harder to swallow truths... ... though, with how shadow milk seems to backslide whenever elder faerie is involved... )
[that is probably wise? he is exhausted. and he fears he won't get that much rest while he's in this inn. it seems...
anyway, Elder Faerie nods. his tea is gone, and he isn't comforted to know that White Lily has suffered so much. and he's here now, so that's something else he'll have to deal with. he writes:
"Very well. Once I have regained my strength, we shall continue."
his brows furrow again. he needs to figure out a better way to communicate with her than writing all the time. but this is fine, for now. he will figure out something.
( with him having given her his power... will he be able to defend himself? )
The inn is safe and often left alone when the Forest is up to it's tricks, so you should be okay here... I remember that some threats will try to lure you outside, but it's been quiet since the carnival...
[he wonders the same thing. just how strong is he, now that he's back from the dead? if he is already tired, this could mean trouble.
Elder Faerie doesn't respond for now, except for a nod, comforted by her presence, though saddening as it may be. he will close his eyes for a little while, and try not to think about coffins]
