[Of course he heard the announcement. He just decided not to play into it the way literally everyone else in the Grove seems to be doing - including this poor kid on his doorstep.
A number of latches come undone on Stan's side of the door, and something heavy is pushed aside before the it cracks open. Aira will be able to see him peek through the door, watching him for a moment, looking him up and down to see if he's serious. He seems to be, and that puts an unsettled, difficult to define look on his face.
They don't have the luxury of time at the moment though, so he bites his tongue and opens the door wider for him.]
Get in here before something out there gets you, idiot!
[If Aira doesn't move fast enough, Stan will literally tug him inside by the collar.]
[ Eep. He doesn't quite need the yank, he does come in when told. Whether he's just too slow in doing so or what he's not sure, but he ends up inside and... takes a step back from the door so Stan can redo all of those locks without hinderance.
Unfortunately he is very serious and very scared if the way he's wringing the sleeve of his jacket is any indication. ]
I was careful coming over... I don't really want to go out like that... I'm not sure it'd count for helping.
[It takes a couple minutes to resecure the door, letting Stan attempt to ignore Aira for a moment. He doesn't like what he's hearing though, and he's gritting his teeth as the locks clink shut.]
Sheesh, you're awful picky for someone who wants to die so bad.
[It sounds like it could have been a joke, maybe, if his tone was anything other than annoyed. Stan turns and moves past Aira with a "follow me" hand gesture, into the kitchen. There he fills up the kettle and lights the stove - it takes a little longer than usual since his fire powers are gone for the moment. When he speaks again he's gruff and to the point.]
Only if you're gullible enough to listen to the Forest. If he told you to go jump off a cliff, would you?
[It's more serious than that of course, but breaking it down to basics might help Aira see the bigger picture here - or at least see it the way Stan sees it.]
That jerk is just taking advantage of people desperate to make this whole thing end sooner. We have no reason to think he's gonna keep his word now after all the crap he's put us through before. I wouldn't be surprised if he just felt like watching us all kill each other and didn't plan on helping at all!
cw suicidal ideation/mention; survivors guilt (just blanket for the rest of this)
[ Aira looks... a little hurt for a moment. He hesitates and then mutters ]
Sacrificing our own was the actual answer to some of the issues we faced. I've lost count of how many times my friends cast themselves into the void for my sake or someone else's. I just... figured it was my turn now. If... I could prevent one of you from having to, then...
[ He's not used to being given a straightforward answer of what to do. Of course he jumped at it. It never occured to him it might be a lie. ]
[Some of the annoyance falls away. Not all of it, but enough to make it clear he's being maybe a little too hard on him. Since he doesn't currently have the ability to superheat the kettle and make it go faster, he pulls up a chair across from Aira at the table.]
Look...I'm not gonna say that's never something you might have to do. Sometimes there really IS no other way. But now's not one of those times. When you're in a situation where you've got the time to think it through, you gotta really think it through.
[He taps his temple for emphasis. This is the nicest he can manage without directly calling Aira stupid, so it's going to have to be enough.]
I can tell you're a bleeding heart kinda person so that probably all sounds selfish, but if you do a sacrifice like that when there are other options, that's not a sacrifice anymore. That's just a gamble that's gonna piss off people who care about you.
[ He didn't honestly think there was time. Not when he'd been staying in the inn with literally every other person in the Grove under that roof. He would trust some of them with his life, of course, but he really didn't want to be the reason someone snapped at someone else. He didn't want to be picked out as the weak one and hunted for sport.
In his panic he genuinely thought this was the best option, but he can tell that Stan wouldn't like hearing any of that. Would probably just get annoyed at his insistence, so he lets it go and just looks down at the table like the nicks and stains are suddenly very interesting. ]
[Stan's never totally sure how to handle people that are just...nice? Apologetic? He feels like he's dealing with a little kid, in that if he keeps pushing Aira the kid might burst into tears on him. Gruff isn't the answer, and he knows gruff isn't the answer, but gruff is kind of all he has in his emotional maturity box.
But he's trying here, so he just tries to move on. He doesn't have it in him to coddle Aira, and it comes out awkward, but at least he isn't berating him?]

Sit down. I'm not killing you. Neither is Dipper.

[ It sounds a little petulant, but he's too frazzled to work up any actual sass. He just sort of sounds like a soggy puppy.
He does follow him into the kitchen, a little confused ]
Huh? Why not? Isn't... that the only way to end this whole mess?
