Hello! Today I want to make sure we all know the difference between certain plants. As you can see, they all look similar, but these two are safe. One has five prongs on its leaves and smooth vines. It's called a Virginia Creeper. The Hog Peanut has smooth, round and dull leaves. Blackberry bushes look like many other plants, but if you see thorns on the stems, then you're safe! They also fruit! Poison Ivy, however, have three leaflets that alternate along the stem, and can have dull leaves but are usually glossy. It also holds an oily resin called urushiol, which causes itching and rashes after contact with skin. It does not go on your face. Thank you!

[It probably won't take long. Meganium is trundling along happily swinging his neck from side to side, totally nonplussed. He does not care. His stomach is happy, his face does not have poison ivy breakouts.

I'm not seeing any rash or disturbances... he seems rather satisfied! But maybe he shouldn't eat things he's not familiar with for his person's peace of mind?

in case anyone is in the mushroom forest:

these are chanterelles and they're edible. THESE are called jack o lantern mushrooms and they will kill you. notice how they look the same. jack o lanterns glow at night and the gill pattern is different.

these cute round mushrooms are puffballs and they get pretty big, you can eat them and use them as a bread crust substitute for a pizza if you fry them up. THESE are "amanita eggs" and they will kill you. to tell the difference you have to bisect them, puffballs should be completely solid inside and amanita eggs will look like there's a developing mushroom head inside.

destroying angels look like your garden variety of edible white mushroom. they will kill you.

if you see a mushroom that's red with white spots, that's deadly. that won't be confused for anything just don't fucking eat it. they're bright and the bright colour means "get the fuck away from me". do not eat this.

yellow morels and half-free morels are edible. they are not to be confused with the false morel (will kill you) and V. bohemica (will give you bad stomach troubles) (might also kill you if you eat too many).

i can identify all of them easily but if you want mushrooms and don't know what to look for, come get me. i'm not responsible if you decide to be dumb and poison yourself.

I was always told it's not safe to forage mushrooms at all. Even if you're an expert it's easy to get it wrong.

that's the smart thing to do yeah. but i grew up in the fields and swamps, and you take what you can get. nothing builds confidence like being forced to learn what you can and can't eat young.

I've been in a couple of places where I've have to improvise, but luckily not for long. I can't imagine growing up like that.

Rashes. But rashes near orifices can be especially bad. If I find evidence that someone has had this happen to them, I will be upset and I will have to find you.
