What do people do if they can't protect themselves here? I don't want to be stuck inside all the time, but I don't want to have to rely on other people either.

Before anyone says it, I'm not looking to learn how to fight. With all the weirdness in this place there's got to be some other way.

Besides, you definitely listed things you have to learn. There's no way you can just pick up a gun or a crossbow and use it without any lessons even if you wanted to.
