This is Mafuyu Asahina. It's come to my attention that another from... an iteration of my home country is here, now, so I thought it might be important to explain a specific cultural norm. Those in my country, and some similar to it across both the world and across dimensions, have very strict guidelines about names and politeness.

It is normally considered rude to use one's first name without permission. Most of my classmates would call me Asahina instead of Mafuyu despite being in the same class as while we are on good terms, friendly terms even, we are not close friends. Using one's first name without permission among peers is overly familiar at best, rude at worst. It can get even more complicated if one goes into honorifics, but I don't have the time or energy for that.

(I personally do not mind using Mafuyu with the people of the Grove due to personal matters, but that should not be assumed of everyone from Japan or countries similar to it. I just thought this might be helpful for others.)

I'm going back to resting now, unless anyone has questions? I guess. Please keep in mind I am still not fully recovered though.

( as a note, when she writes asahina mafuyu, it's with kanji that translates roughly to 'midwinter morning'! in case anyone wants to be an excited dog about name meanings. )

[A split second of translation will show he writes all of this in English characters. If it translates to Japanese, the surname kanji is "Red Tree" and katakana for his name is Raion...though, it's one character off from a different Japanese word.]

I'm Japanese-Canadian though so "Ryan" is totally good. My family's huge anyway so it's always a little weird when people try the last name first thing.

I'm not from a high-class family, so Miss would be the most fitting. 'San' is the equivalent from my country, as you may hear from Mayoi. (He's very polite.)

Ah, I see. Similar to the nobles of our world, then, I suppose, though without the addition of titles... Calling anyone else by their surname tends to be seen as abrasive, though.

I've been recovering from two snake bites. I've been in poor health for some time now, so this hasn't helped...

Prefixes and honorifics are fine to use if so desired. 'San' is the most common back home, roughly a miss or mister, but there are others that are very situational. Something equivalent to that would work, if you really want to.

( for reference, she's been very good at using 'san' for people! i just do not like typing it out. )

If you want to be called Asahina I'm sure people wouldn't mind calling you that instead.

My name is Mayoi Ayase, though I do not mind how I am referred to, personally. I have been away from home for some time and so, I have gotten used to the differences.

[Mayoi’s name is written interestingly, (マヨイ 礼瀬) His given name is in hiragana which is a common word in japanese that translates to “hesitant”. The Kanji in his surname actually struggles with the auto translator for a minute, wanting to change ‘aya’ to ‘rei’ before it settles on Ayase. It is, in fact, a pretty uncommon reading for that kanji. His name can be read as “Hesitating gratitude through the rapids”.]

Aha, that is quite like the "Cookie" addition to our names! Though we are all mostly Cookie and thus there is no need, it is respectful to include it, no matter the situation. Even with those you consider close friends, though if you are more intimate with them, then it is often dropped!

I'm Oscar Pine. On Remnant we address friends and peers by their first name, or a nickname.

It's not always overly familiar to use someone's first name, but it can be. A lot of people consider it rude for students, employees, or soldiers to call their teachers, bosses, or commanding officers by their first name.

Generally, doctors, teachers and strangers are all addressed with their last names, and the proper honorific. Honorifics are also very key in proper manners, and those of higher standing are the ones to set the terms once familiarity is present. But it's all very! Very complicated to explain, to be honest.
