FAMILY MEETING 2.0

Who: Everyone. All Y'all. You Cannot Escape.
What: Info share because I know y'all got the plot
When: Late August, post Flower-Murdering
Where: The Inn
Warnings: triggers should be tagged appropriately in post headers! please and thank you!!

[Gnosis has government assigned himself "guy who bothers everyone about the plot" this time around. He craves information. You have information. You will give the information up during what he's calling a Town Hall, but was previously called a Family Meeting.

People who do not show up for the "what the fuck just happened this month" meeting will not be forcibly dragged into it, but will receive the most Disdainful, Judgemental look. Can you truly stand to be judged so harshly by a 35 year old man... no. You cannot. (You probably can actually he's not that intimidating.)

There are no snacks (currently) but there is freshly-brewed tea by Gnosis himself, and there's a framed corkboard he's brought downstairs (presumably out of his room) with notes on it, as well as some of those mysterious photographs that have been taken of everyone that he's asked to have. You know, so he can piece this puzzle together. Once everyone's gathered...]

Let's get started. Some of you have been here longer than others, so I hope you can volunteer information so we can figure out where we are and why, and anything else we later arrivals might have missed from the collective puzzle. Please try to stay on task.

[[ooc: hi hello this is your share-the-plot-ICly log, with the goal of a) catching up new arrivals and b) making sure information circulates ICly to avoid metagaming. which like that hasn't been a problem but you know, just in case. if you've never done one of these before they function a bit like this where everyone shares important info they've discovered with the class.]]

The sea is known as the Emerald Sea, and it was frequently used for oceanic trade, and very rarely travel. It's noted that the beachside there was beloved during the summer, and a rather peaceful place to spend the day.

A few entries forward, Irene will find notes about a trade ship being attacked by a "strange, tentacled thing"... but there are no other records about if this has happened again, or if there's any protocol around it.

It is also noted in another entry that there are many sharp stones on the coast, several miles out, that have caused disasters in the past from sailors who weren't paying attention or didn't know the lay of the sea.

[ Interesting. Any mentions of strange fish they've found or anything weird about the marine life from the river or ocean? ]

There are a few sparse records of fish, but Aldric doesn't seem to be overly-knowledgeable about such things. There are your regular run of the mill fish in here (tuna, turtles which I'm 99% sure are not fish but they come from the ocean so they're in here, salmon, clams which also I think are not fish?, octopus...es?) but there's not much else. The "strange creature" doesn't appear again.

The river fish seem to be more commonly talked about at a certain point, as the river is far closer. There are, again, pretty normal fish in there — Crappie, Speck, Bluegill, etc.

The weirdest fish mentioned are "something long and slimy and with too many teeth" and "something that's like a hermit crab with tentacles" but it's unclear if these are actually dangerous creatures or like, an eel/oarfish or a nautilus. Irene can take those descriptions as she wishes.

[ She's assuming the worst, thanks!

Okay, aside from the water-based things, can Irene get a feel for what "business as usual" may have been by skimming over the pages?

"Business as usual" in general for the Grove seems to be a whole lot of trade and a whole lot of building things. It's a newer settlement, after all. There are several mentions of certain families helping build things, like the Morais family. There are mentions of a business-oriented family, the Silverashes, helping to establish further trade with help from the Edelweisses. There are mentions of a Doctor Grenore seeing to all injuries incurred from building an entire settlement, and someone named Guelhenthart completing a map of the settlement and outlying area by hand.

There are holidays and festivals, there are fishing tournaments and mentions of children playing in snow, there are weddings and birthday parties and all of it is a settlement-wide event. Most importantly, there is a lot of love.

Is there anything about Dario?

Indeed! Dario was not well-known by Aldric, it seems, but he's mentioned by name and described as a "gruff old fella from Haven". There are a few accounts of him sailing over to the settlement on business, but the details of the business aren't mentioned.

On one particular journal entry, Aldric writes that Dario arrived in the grove with a young girl in his arms, and did not return to Haven. Instead, he raised the little girl in the new settlement.

[ She's not sure how to feel about that! She's not sure what she was expecting, either? Whatever. She's gonna check one more thing - any mentions of a woman with a turtle and her tall brother in the book?? ]

[personal profile] sticksandbonesmods 2023-09-11 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No mentions of either of those. There are other siblings mentioned — Aldric and his sister Olivia, obviously, since Aldric owns the journal; Aldric's children; the siblings of people currently within the Grove, like Felicity's brother and Elsword's sister... but she can't find any records of two tall people or a giant turtle.

[ Interesting. She'll talk to the siblings about it later, maybe. And I lied about that last thing being the last thing, she wants to check one more thing: what does the very last page say? The last page that has anything on it, that is, assuming the "last page" is blank. ]

The very last page with anything on it says:

...it looks to be drawn with a fingertip, and there are ashes smeared across the page.

[ Upon seeing Irene distressed, Mizuki would like to take a look at the page, too. How is the book bound? Is it easy enough to carefully remove a page without ruining it? Mizuki would try to take this page to test the ashes and potentially even the text at some point.

…Well, maybe not Mizuki himself, but get someone else to-

If not, he won't attempt. Or if it is, but you just want to keep it intact, Mizuki isn't being discreet about it. Feel free to have Elsword say something??? ]

It's the sort of journal that's hand-bound with string and leather, nothing fancy that you'd buy at a store but rather lovingly handcrafted. It's easy to remove a page without ruining everything, but it might be better to simply take the entire book and test the page that way.

But yeah if Mizuki starts trying to rip things out, Elsword will likely come over to say, hey let's not that's evidence. He didn't get to when Shalem started tearing shit out, so.

[ Alright. He'll nod, apologize, and point out the ashes/blood, saying if they could preserve that at all until he can ask the merch siblings for some sort of testing kits, he'd appreciate it. ]

[ Looking at .. . The fish thing - following the train of thought. Were the fishes notably normal - and then suddenly changed. Or Does aldric regard the fish and this apparent sighting of this tentacle monster as if 'thats normal as fuck.'

Basically is there a time difference between the start of the journal that talks about haven, and any fish/etc. Versus the moment the Tentacle monster showed up -

with caoimhe reading the journal, does she notice it start around when Aldric begins talking about his dreams of Elijah and the falling of stars. ]

[personal profile] sticksandbonesmods 2023-09-11 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on the pretty blunt way this is written, Aldric thinks these fish are pretty normal for the area. The "tentacled thing" is mentioned in a way that's like "oh yeah well THAT'S scary but whatever man the ocean is fucked up".

As far as she can tell, there's no correlation between the falling of the stars and the ocean being weird. The ocean seems to just be the ocean, as far as Aldric's writing is concerned.
